Bare roots claw through the frozen ground
No green remains where the trees fell down
My footsteps break the crust of stone
No birds above no way back home
A leaden sky hangs over me
I hear the wind move through the dead trees
I cross the place where the forest died
And carry its ashes beneath my skin
Thorns wrap my bones the land is bare
I walk the dead wood no god is there
Ice in my blood but I still breathe
This empty wild is all that's left of me
Black roots twist beneath the clay
Through hollow trunks where the light decays
The frozen air tastes sharp as iron
I follow tracks that end in silence
Dead branches tear across my skin
The deeper I walk the more they draw me in
I rose from the earth where the fire had fed
On the names of the living and the bones of the dead
Thorns wrap my bones the land is bare
I walk the dead wood no god is there
Blood on the stones beneath my feet
Still I follow the path through the dead trees
They burned the oldest trees to dust
Left every stream choked with ash and rust
I thought I heard a voice below—
Only the roots still growing slow
I place my hand against the ground
And feel them move without a sound
The cold cuts deeper than the mine
But these roots are living under mine
If I fall here let the branches rise
Let them find their way back to the sky
Thorns wrap my bones the land is bare
I walk the dead wood no god is there
If these roots break through my grave
Let the forest take back what the fire claimed
